The products from Ghana have arrived! After sending them 10 polo shirts with the SAGE logo, 2 computer games, 3 iPod Shuffles, and a digital camera, we received hats, wristbands, jerseys, and t-shirts. SAGE T-Shirt Design to Help Haiti

Mercer Trade has submitted a t-shirt design for a competition put on by SAGE (Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship) to promote the efforts SAGE is making to help children in Haiti.  The prize is $500 and you can see our entry below.

Please join MIHS staff, students, administrators and the Mercer Island community for the unveiling of the high school’s new solar panel system. This community thank you event will feature Harry Bolson’s senior culminating project of sustainability and energy efficiency awareness. Fully funded by the Mercer Island community, the new solar voltaic display will offset the electricity consumed by the marketing department.

Mercer Island Student Brightens up School with Senior Project

UW Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition

Mercer Trade was invited to participate as student judges at the University of Washington Foster School of Business’s Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition.  This competition drew participants from all over the world including India, Rwanda, and Mali. The winner, Nuru, was a light that provides Rwandans with a safer and healthier alternative to burning kerosene charged from a pedal-powered generator.  For more information about the competition, visit http://www.foster.washington.edu/centers/gbc/globalsocialentrepreneurshipcompetition/Pages/GSEC.aspx.

Speaking at the State Board of Education

On January 13th, four of us (Juniors and Seniors from Mercer Island High School) went to Tumwater to sit in on a Washington State Board of Education meeting. We listened to the board discuss high school graduation rates in Washington compared to other states, standardized testing, and the importance of focusing more on science and math in a child’s education.

The board also talked about CORE 24, which is what we came to talk about during public comment. During our speeches we emphasized the importance of CORE 24 and argued that with the proper support, all students in Washington are capable of meeting the 24-credit graduation requirement. We also asked our state board representatives to be leaders in this field, that with their support, students all over Washington can achieve. We shared our personal stories and our views on senior’s culminating project (mostly that we don’t like it). The board members were really appreciative of our presence. It seemed like they usually make their decisions based solely on statistics, so hearing the opinions of current high school students was a good change of pace and will hopefully impact their final decisions concerning CORE 24 and the culminating project.
